Wooden live trap: the box trap

The box trap is a long wooden box with a drop door. An animal follows the bait, touches the trigger at the back, and the door falls shut behind it. It stays unharmed. That makes it the most humane trap: non-target animals, cats and protected species can simply be let go again. It takes more work to build than a snare and, like every trap, belongs only in a genuine emergency.

Eenvoudig uitgelegd

A box trap is like a little wooden house with a door that is held up at the top. At the back of the house lies something tasty, for example a piece of apple. When a rabbit goes in and nibbles it, a small stick slips away – and the door falls shut. The rabbit then sits in the dark, but it is not hurt.

That is the big difference from other traps: if a cat or a hedgehog is inside in the morning, you simply open the door and the animal runs away. That makes this trap the kindest of all.

Still, as with all traps: here you may only build it in a real emergency, when someone is stuck for days and no help comes. And you must look every morning and every evening.

Hoe het werkt

The box trap has three parts: the box, the drop door and the trigger. The door slides up and down in two guides. A line holds it up and runs over a lever on the roof to the back of the box. There it is tied to a small trigger peg hooked lightly behind a notch.

The animal smells the bait, goes in and tugs at it. As it does, the peg slips out of the notch. The line suddenly goes slack and the door falls under its own weight. There is no spring and no stored tension – only gravity.

Because the box is closed and dark, many animals calm down inside. In an open wire cage, by contrast, they see the person coming and try to flee in panic.

Waar het om gaat

The door must drop reliably all the way down. If it sticks halfway, the animal escapes or gets trapped under it. So smooth the guides and let the door drop many times before setting the trap.

The box must be large enough that the door does not strike the animal, and smooth inside so it cannot hurt itself. Protruding nails, splinters or wire ends are not allowed.

The trap stands on a run, blended into its surroundings, with a bait the animal knows. And it is checked at least twice a day – even a live trap means fear and stress for the animal.

Veiligheid: hier moet je op letten

For people the box trap is harmless, but for the animal inside it is not free of stress. Place it in the shade so the animal does not overheat, and out of the wind so it does not get chilled.

Caught animals bite and scratch. Open the door only with gloves and from the side and never reach in. If you catch the wrong animal – cat, hedgehog, marten, wildcat or another protected animal – open the door and step back.

Legally, catching game without hunting rights remains poaching – even with a humane trap. That is why it only belongs in a genuine emergency.

De noodsituatie en de plek beoordelen

A box trap is only worth it if you stay in one place for several days and rescue is not coming. Look for a fresh small-game run close to camp but far from paths, pastures and houses. Enter the trap in your list.

De noodsituatie en de plek beoordelen

A box trap is only worth it if you stay in one place for several days and rescue is not coming. Look for a fresh small-game run close to camp but far from paths, pastures and houses. Enter the trap in your list.

  2. 2

    Build the box

From boards, split wood or tightly laid sticks, lash or peg together a box with a floor, two sides and a roof, about forearm length and wide enough for a rabbit to fit in comfortably. The back wall is closed, leaving only a small hole for the trigger line. Smooth everything on the inside.

  3. 3

Fit the guides and the door

At the front, lash two upright strips to each side so that a narrow slot forms between them. The door – a board slightly larger than the opening – must slide up and down in it without sticking. Try it several times: the door must drop all the way down on its own.

  4. 4

    Lever on the roof

Set up a small forked stick on the roof and lay a straight stick across it as a lever. Tie the front end of the lever to the door with a line; the rear end gets the trigger line, which leads through the hole in the back wall into the box.

  5. 5

    Set the trigger

Inside at the back, tie a short trigger peg to the trigger line and hook it lightly behind a small notch or crossbar on the back wall. Fix the bait to the trigger peg. When the animal pulls at it, the peg slips out and the door falls.

Test the trigger ten times with a stick, never with your hand in the box.

  6. 6

    Camouflage and bait

Set the box with the opening facing the run, blend it into its surroundings with leaves and soil, and scatter a little soil on the floor inside. Use bait that small game eats anyway: apples, root vegetables, grain or fresh shoots. Tie marker tape at eye level beside it.

  7. 7

    Check morning and evening

Go to the trap at least twice a day. If the door is shut, look through a gap to see which animal is inside. Cats, hedgehogs, martens or protected species are released at once: open the door from the side and step back.

  8. 8

Deal with the catch and dismantle

A small animal that you must eat in a real emergency is stunned and killed at once, as described in the entry “Checking traps, killing animals quickly and dismantling traps”. When you move on, take the trap apart, carry the lines away and scatter the wood.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Door sticks in its guides and does not fall fully
  • Box too small – the door hits the animal as it falls
  • Protruding nails or splinters inside
  • Trap in full sun
  • Checked too rarely
  • Reaching into the box with your hand

Kort overzicht

Materiaal

Snijd geen levend hout waar dat verboden is.

Regels over het meedragen van messen verschillen per regio – controleer de plaatselijke regels.

  • Opvallend gekleurd markeerlint

Geschikt voor

  • Longer emergencies at a fixed place, for example in an abandoned hut
  • Areas where cats or protected animals might also be about
  • Anyone who would rather check an animal alive before deciding

Niet geschikt voor

  • Short emergencies or when on the move – building takes too long
  • When you cannot check the trap at least twice a day
  • Larger animals – a box of this size is only for small game

Voorwaarden

  • Echt levensgevaar, geen redding binnen bereik
  • Basisregels uit "Vallen in een echte noodsituatie" gelezen
  • A fixed camp for several days
  • Boards, bark or straight sticks nearby

Veiligheid

  • Even in a live trap an animal is frightened and can hurt itself or get chilled if it waits too long. So check often, place the trap in shade and out of the wind, and make the inside of the box smooth with no protruding nails or splinters.
  • Caught animals bite and scratch. Open the door only with gloves and from the side, never reach into the box. If you catch the wrong animal, open the door and step back.

Hoe het werkt

The door hangs raised between two guide strips and is held by a line. The line runs over a lever on the roof to the trigger at the back of the box. When the animal tugs at the bait or steps on the trigger, the trigger peg comes free, the line goes slack and the door slides down under its own weight. Because the box is dark and closed, many animals calm down in it faster than in a wire cage.

Voordelen

  • The animal stays unharmed
  • Non-target animals can be released
  • Harmless to people and pets
  • Can be reset again and again

Nadelen

  • A lot of building work
  • Needs boards or many straight sticks
  • The animal must then be killed by hand
  • Still illegal without hunting rights

Achtergrondkennis

Vakinhoudelijke achtergrond

Wooden box traps have existed for centuries, and hunters still use them today, for example for martens and foxes. They belong to the traps that hold an animal unharmed – exactly what the international humane trapping standards and the German Federal Hunting Act require when a trap does not kill instantly.

In an emergency the box trap has one big advantage over snares and deadfalls: only at the check is it decided what happens to the animal. So no pet and no protected animal comes to harm.

Varianten

Treadle trigger
Instead of the bait peg, a loose small board lies on the floor at the back. When the animal steps on it, it tips and pulls out the peg. This also catches animals that only sniff the bait.
Ready-made box
An old crate, a wooden wine box or a section of concrete or clay pipe can replace building the box. What matters is a smooth inside and a door that falls reliably.
